With the holiday season just peeking around the corner, many of us are preparing for a whirlwind of winter baking activities up ahead – sugar cookies, gingerbread, tarts, or fudge. Edibles might be your new favourite way to consume cannabis!
By adding cannabis oils or powders to your favourite festive treats, you can expect a longer-lasting experience when compared to vaping and smoking. Also, the experience is often a more systemic, whole-body experience than one that is purely psychological. Whether you already consume edible cannabis products or see it as an opportunity to try something new, we would like to help you elevate your homemade holiday treats with a variety of sweet treats to make at home!
1. Make your own Gummies!
It’s a classic edible, and it’s easier to make than you think! For making your own gummies, you can find your own recipe online (try this one for healthy paleo gummies) or follow this vegan Pectin Jellies Recipe by Marissa Sertich. You will need to pick up some candy moulds from your local craft supply store – a variety of fun shapes can be found, especially this time of year! We chose a snowflake mould.
You will need a small dispenser to distribute your candy mix into the mould, as well as add your preferred cannabis product to incorporate into your gummy mix. We stock a number of BC-made cannabis oils and extracts which can be used in this edible recipe, but you must first decide which effects you hope to achieve from your homemade edibles! You can check out our Cannabis Strain Guide to get an idea of the right experience for you.
We’ve followed the Pectin Jellies Recipe and they were delish! If you’re not into creating your sweets from scratch, we’ve also got the perfect DIY edible gummy kit for you, up next!
2. Zen Singer Gummies DIY Kit
So homemade gummies can be a lot of fun to make, and even more fun to eat, but if you want to save yourself from shopping for all of the ingredients we have a great recommendation for you!
Zen Zingers, based in beautiful Victoria BC, produces a variety of home gummy-making kits that come with everything you need (except for the cannabis oil). You can purchase a variety of flavours including cola, mango, raspberry, and peach. Cola is definitely a favourite of ours and goes well with the Reign Drops by Pure Sunfarms!
We’ve tested them out here at Flight and they’re an edible dream come true. Easy, fast, and flavourful.
Check out their website here to learn more about the product, and watch their video for instructions!
3. Homemade Gingerbread House
Sure, you can pick up a pre-made gingerbread house kit, but if you want to experience the traditional in your home, you can do the whole thing yourself in just a couple of hours! In order to jazz up your gingerbread with some THC, you can substitute in our recently posted recipe for homemade cannabutter, or even use some infused honey in place of some of the molasses.
You can double the recipe and get creative with an even bigger gingerbread house of your own design, or if you want to keep it really simple, just roll out your dough and make a few dozen gingerbread men! We want to advise that these treats are for adults only, but make for a great holiday activity to share with good company.
Be careful! Ask yourself, “who is going to be within arm’s reach of these treats?” and make sure it’s out of children’s reach! It would be hazardous to a child’s health to ingest any THC-containing products, so make sure to share your infused holiday treats with only individuals that are 19 years and older.
What you will need:
- 1/2 cup butter, room temperature
- 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1 Tbsp cinnamon
- 1 Tbsp ground ginger
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons water
Instructions:
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter, brown sugar, molasses, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and baking soda until smooth. Blend in flour and water to make a stiff dough. Chill for 30 minutes or until firm.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
- Cut out the following paper patterns for the gingerbread house template: 2 x rectangles, 3” x 5” (front and back of house) 2 x rectangles, 3” x 5 ½” (roof pieces) 2 x pentagons, 3” x 3” square extending to 5 ½” roof peak (for house end pieces) 4 x smaller rectangles, 1” x 1½” (roof and sides of entryway) 1 x small pentagon, 2” x 1½” square extending to 2 ½” entry peak (for front door). - Roll gingerbread dough out to edges on a large rectangular cookie sheet. Trace out your paper patterns and cut each of them out using a knife.
- Bake at 375 degrees F for about 15 minutes until dough feels firm.
- While still warm and soft, place patterns on top of the gingerbread to trim the edges clean. Leave to cool on baking sheet.
- Once cool you can either decorate your house pieces or fully assemble it first and decorate after! Using this recipe for royal icing you can have some serious glue to hold it all together.
Royal Icing:
In a mixing bowl, whip 2 large egg whites until foamy add ½ tsp. cream of tartar and slowly mix in 3 cups of powdered sugar a little bit at a time. Once the powdered sugar is incorporated, turn mixer to high and continue beating until thick and the icing holds its shape (about 3-5 minutes). Store well covered.
How to choose the right cannabis product for your edibles
If you want a pure CBD experience, with absolutely no psychological effects, try a product like our Pure Sun 30 CBD oil. This CBD is potent, so be sure to add a small amount to start! You can find all our product recommendations down below.
If it is just the mental high you are after, you can explore the difference of using a sativa oil versus an indica oil in your gummies.
One final idea to leave you with is an easy add-on to any food or drink item – be it a store-bought gingerbread kit, your grandma’s stuffing, or an evening cocktail. We carry some powdered THC extracts, like the 10mg sachets from TGOD (The Green Organic Dutchman). This flavorless white powder dissolves quickly and is specially formulated to take effect in as little as 15 minutes after consumption.
As always, if you are uncertain about which cannabis oil option is right for you, this is the specialty of our educated staff at Flight Cannabis Co. Without prescribing or diagnosing, our purpose is to guide you towards the products that are best for your intended purposes through information and low-risk trial and error.
Which Sweet Treat will You Try?!
However you choose to consume your cannabis-infused edibles this holiday season, remember that these items must be kept out of reach from children and also not consumed before operating a motor vehicle. We want to heighten your holiday experience while reducing any risks, so always go low and go slow! Enjoy your tasty holiday edibles and relax this holiday season.
